As a hard disk is the fastest and largest backup medium you can get, you may want to backup all your important files to an external USB hard drive. You can backup literally everything: your Outlook and Outlook Express files, your bookmarks, your favourite save games, and of course, your important work documents, photos, images and maybe even videos.

As an external HDD is detached from your system and, combined with a strong encryption algorithm, like blowfish or 3DES, you can get maximum security. Just make sure you actually remember the encryption password. You can also store your external hard disk offsite (at a friend's house, a paid locker or specialized fire-proof storage place) in case your information is very important (well, generally, anyone can do that and it can't hurt for sure).

So, go with external HDD and backup as fast as you want, as much as you want, secure your important data, get the cheapest backups and even be able to carry your backups anywhere you want.

Today I switched on my computer and after a short while I need to access some information that I had backed up on my external hard drive.
I had bought and started to use the external hard drive after I had suffered a computer failure some 12 months or so ago and because it had caused me so many problems decided that at long last I ought to take the advice of everyone online and backup my vital files and information on a regular basis.

As a consequence of this information it would appear that with any vital information it is worthwhile making backup copies not once but several times and on different hard drives and even cd's.

As far as my own lost information was concerned I searched the internet for any software that was capable of recovery and after trying several demo versions decided that the best as far as I was concerned was the Recovermyfiles software.

The Recovermyfiles software was extremely easy to set up and amazingly was able to scan my hard drive and give me the opportunity to recover all my files and folders that I though were lost for ever.

I have been contacted by numerous up-and-coming artists who wanted to know if I would be able to make a New Moon trailer using one of their songs. Without realising that I would get this many, I was still quite confident that at least I would be able to mention them on my channel, and create a few videos for stand out songs. That was until a week ago when my external hard drive broke. I will not be releasing any trailers any time soon. All of the videos I have ever made, ever started and all of my clips and music is on that hard drive. I have to take it to a computer repair store, and hoepfully I can get my data recovered. An external hard drive will let you add more storage at a much lower price while at the same time allowing you to control the content yourself. On a system like an Xbox 360, you cannot add content to the built in drive unless it is downloaded from Xbox Live or ripped from a CD. With an external drive, you have full control of your content, and can easily upload or download new content without much trouble.

Choosing Your External Hard Drive

Naturally, you will need a hard drive and an enclosure. Almost any USB external hard drive will work for your purposes. The main difference is if you are looking for portability vs. storage size. If you have some laptop hard drives lying around, then buy a 2.5" laptop hard drive enclosure.
The advantages of using a smaller laptop hard drive are that it will be much smaller and much more portable, and will most likely not require a power supply. However, laptop drives usually pale in capacity compared to regular 3.5" drives of the same price. A 3.5" external hard drive will store much more content but will probably require an extra power port. If your gaming console is usually located in one location and not likely to move around, this type of hard drive might be the best solution.

Formatting Your Hard Drive

Gaming consoles need an external hard drive that is formatted in the FAT32 file system. You can use virtually any hard drive currently sold on the market, as FAT32 can support hard drives up to 2 Terabytes in size. However, the limitation of FAT32 is that it cannot hold individual files larger then 4GB in size. Also, Windows 2000 and XP cannot create or format partitions larger than 32GB. Windows 98 users can only create and partition drives up to 127GB in size. So, in order to create a FAT32 partition and format it above the 32GB or 127GB limitations, you will need a utility like Partition Magic or some other drive/partition utility. I highly recommend CompuApps Swissknife, which can be downloaded for free at download.com for PC users. Mac OSX users can simply open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app, choose the desired drive, and click on the Erase. Choose 'MS-DOS (FAT)' and then click on the 'Erase' button. You should now have a hard drive formatted in FAT32.

Once your drive is done formatting in FAT32, it's simply a matter of uploading content to your new drive and connecting it to your gaming console. Simply connect your USB cable to an available USB port on the front of your Playstation 3, or the back of your Xbox 360. Your game console should recognize your new device automatically, and allow you to browse your new files on the external hard drive.

Watkins suggests that in order for a leader to transition successfully, a leader must be not only be capable of adapting his personal style and competencies, but he must also be able to focus on the organization's need to build a plan for organizational growth.

IDENTIFYING NEEDED LEADERSHIP CHANGES

While this past year has brought change to a great many leaders, what personal leadership changes and transitions did you make in 2009? How would you rate your ability to adapt both personally and organizationally?

Looking forward into 2010, here are some questions to ponder to help you with your leadership success:

Given your experience and leadership strengths, what do you need to do more of and less of?
What new skills do you need to learn? What is your plan to obtain these new skills?
What adjustments do you need to make in the areas of communications, delegation, decision-making, team-building, and also with your trusted network of advisors?

The quality of the answers to these self-reflective questions is contingent on your level of self-awareness. Since some of us are more self-aware of our strengths and weaknesses than others, I always recommend that in addition to answering these questions you use at least one other leadership assessment technique, such as the Hogan Leadership Survey. The Hogan Leadership Survey can not only add insight into needed changes, but can also provide an unbiased view of your behavior. Another option to increase your leadership success is observational feedback which can provide you with information on how individuals view your key leadership competencies as compared to your organization's leadership competency model.

PLANNING TO IMPLEMENT CHANGE

Now that you've identified the changes you need to make, a personal development plan needs to be created. Creating a solid plan with SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound) goals and implementing your development plan are critical to effective leadership because unless you actually make the necessary changes you will not realize success.

Planning to implement change is often the time when I and other executive coaches are asked for assistance. Co-developing a personal development plan with the leader and coaching the leader effectively through the necessary behavioral changes are effective to creating sustainable change. Using an internal coach is also an effective way to create a permanent change. The advantage to using an internal coach is their organizational knowledge, while the disadvantage is the potential concern regarding confidentiality of the executive being coached. Whether you choose an internal or external coach, coaching will provide you with a systematic and proven method to create long-term change.

CONCLUSION

If you are like most leaders, you and your organization have had to adapt to the economic changes that have occurred over the last 18 months. Adapting requires both personal as well as organizational changes. Personal changes first need to be identified by you, others around you, and via an assessment tool. Then a personal development plan should be created, and a coach identified to work with you to help you create sustainable change.

Why Don't DVD Recorders With Hard Drive Functionality Have Twin Digital Tuners? Part 2

In part one of this series, we discovered why anything recorded onto the hard disk of DVD recorders with hard drive capability has to be in DVD quality. Here in part two we will see why this fact effectively prevents the viable manufacture of models with twin digital tuners.

The fact is that the process of converting digital broadcasts to DVD quality is very hard work, and there is a dedicated processor in the machine to carry it out. With twin tuners, assuming that any programme received could be recorded and then selected for burning to DVD, you would need two of these dedicated processors, which would put the price of the machine up a lot as the specification of the whole machine would need to be much higher.

But why not have one digital tuner just for watching live programmes in whatever quality they happen to be in, and a second digital tuner connected to the hard drive just for recording, which would have all its signals converted to DVD quality in the usual way?

This would seem sensible, because you would only need one dedicated processor to convert the signal from the one tuner into DVD quality; namely the one connected to the hard drive and DVD recorder. The tuner being viewed "live" could be viewed as it stands, as the signal would never be recorded to DVD and so would not need to be converted to DVD quality.

On the face of it, this sounds workable, but in practice it would be complicated for the average consumer. You would have no "pause live TV" function, because that requires hard disk use and everything on the hard disk has to be converted to DVD quality. You would also be able to record only from the one tuner and not from the other, so this would make the recording interface more complicated. It would appear as if the second tuner were completely separate from everything else in the box. It would look to the consumer as if it had been bolted on at the last minute rather than being an integral part of the machine.

So, as you can see, having twin tuners in DVD recorders with hard drive functionality is a complicated business and not something that can currently be achieved very satisfactorily without adding significantly to the cost of the machine.

Given that the average new LCD TV has a built-in digital tuner, DVD manufacturers probably reason that this is a good enough solution to the problem of how to watch one digital channel and record another. It avoids them having to build new and much more expensive DVD recorders with hard drive functionality to overcome the above complex technical issues.

There are different connections coming from the power supply so lets explain them.The ones with yellow,black and red wires with 5 connections are called standard peripheral power connectors.These get connected to the DVD roms and hard drives to give them power.There will also be a long connector from the power supply which is probably the main power connector which you will plug in on your motherboard.

The next type of cable you need is the 40 pin IDE cable which connects from your cd roms and hard drives to the Primary and Secondary IDE ports on the motherboard.You will have to decide which ones go where.

Another important set of connections is the front panel connectors.You need to make sure you plug them in correctly on the motherboard as they light up the corresponding LED lights for your reset button,hard drives and power button.Do this incorrectly and your pc will not boot at all.
